By leaving a gift in your Will (also known as a bequest), you are ensuring they will have a future free from cruelty. Your generosity is a lasting reminder of your belief that animals matter, and will continue to transform the lives of RSPCA NSW animals long after you have passed away. Your gift makes an incredible impact on the lives of animals, as it can be used to: provide food, love and shelter for more than 38,000 abandoned and neglected animals until they find forever homes protect animals and seek justice by enabling the RSPCA NSW Inspectorate to investigate nearly 15,000 cases of animal cruelty each year provide medical attention and care for the tens of thousands of injured and sick animals who are in desperate need of lifesaving procedures every year prevent cruelty through education and community programs that provide guidance and support to people who want to care for their animals, but may not be in the physical or financial state to provide it, such as pet owners experiencing domestic violence, the elderly, socially isolated or the homeless. What qualifies as a gift? A gift can be money, property, shares or even life insurance, committed to RSPCA NSW through a designation in your Will. Deciding how you wish to divide your estate can be a complex undertaking. We therefore encourage you to consult with a solicitor and other advisors. How do I leave a gift to RSPCA NSW in my Will? Decide on your gift Leaving a gift in your Will is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you can support the animals of NSW. Notify your loved ones and RSPCA NSW It is very important to talk to your family and loved ones about your Will. This helps ensure your final wishes are carried out. Let them know that a gift to RSPCA NSW is important to you, and advise any executors and guardians of your wishes. Letting us know that you have included RSPCA NSW in your Will helps us to properly prepare to receive your gift, and to plan for the future. By leaving a gift in your Will, you are ensuring they have a future free from cruelty. Do I have to specify how my gift is used? No. Bequests can be made without a designated purpose so that they assist with RSPCA NSW’s greatest priorities at the time. This allows for greater flexibility. Should critical need arise within the organisation, RSPCA NSW can use your gift to meet that need at the time the gift is received. Should you be interested in designating your gift to a particular region or an area of our work, please contact RSPCA NSW’s Gifts in Wills Manager, Helen Trussler (htrussler@rspcansw.org.au or (02) 9782 4470), to discuss your intentions. Doing so ensures that, in due course, RSPCA NSW will be able to apply your gift according to your wishes. Should I let RSPCA NSW know if I have made them a beneficiary in my Will? Leaving a gift in your Will to RSPCA NSW is one of the most thoughtful ways to support the protection of animals for generations to come. Your gift shows forethought, planning and dedication to the cause. If you’ve already directed a gift to RSPCA NSW, or are considering it, it is your decision if you would like to share that with us, however we ask that if you are comfortable, please do let us know. If you are over 18 then it’s a good idea to have a Will. A Will ensures you’re in control of your assets and outlines how they’ll be distributed to the people and causes you care about. Your loved ones won’t need to make difficult decisions about the distribution of your estate. Do I need professional advice to make a Will? Using a practicing solicitor or trust company helps ensure your Will is legally correct and that your wishes will be followed accurately. I'm an executor of a Will that includes a gift to RSPCA NSW, what should I do? Does it all go to government? Without a Will, decisions about your estate will be made according to the law. This means some or all of the people or causes you care about may not be included in the distribution of your assets. When you have an up-to-date Will, you’re in control of your affairs.
