Keeping Wildlife Safe and Your Cat Happy

While many of us enjoy the company of cats, they hunt many species of native birds and small mammals. This is just one of the reasons why RSPCA NSW strongly advocates keeping cats as indoor pets.

Though cute and capable of love and affection, cats are carnivorous and, being largely nocturnal hunters, may travel several kilometres at night in search of prey. They are very well adapted to hunting, with excellent eyesight, hearing and sense of smell, and can detect the smallest movement, such as the scratching of a mouse many metres away.

Tens of thousands of stray and feral cats roam outside, vulnerable to a variety of risks and preying on our native wildlife. But every cat deserves a safe home where he is loved, cared for and kept free from hazards.
